The Change

6m

April was quite a lazy month for me, I really didnt play much online – just about 60 hours or so. Nevertheless it was the month that will probably have the greatest impact on my poker career so far. I have switched from Fifty50 tournaments to 6-max hyperturbos (65/35) and its much more fun to grind those. I am playing up to 16 tables at once, 10-12 tables on average because of the traffic. Average duration is just 9 minutes and I can earn up to 2000 (!) VPPs per hour, which is really helpful for my SNE chase. My hourly rate is now almost twice as much as I had playing Fifty50s thanks to 68% rakeback – now its somewhere between $300-$400/h. I hope I dont just have some kind of welcome heater, we will see next month.

Its interesting that there are many regs from Fifty50 trying to play these, like Jasonkobe or PokerlameSVK. At least I can finally play heads-up with them! :)

I have switched from F50s for three main reasons:
1) There wasnt very good traffic on F50s lately
2) I am earning almost twice as much VPPs and I have higher hourly rate than on F50s
3) 6max hypers are much more fun to play and I can take breaks anytime I want (when grinding F50s I had to wait for about 40 minutes to finish all tables)

Variance in hypers is indeed really crazy sometimes, even top regs can have 150+ buy-ins downswing. I am used to big swings and it doesnt really matter me much, I just keep playing my A-game and studying more. Its nice to have SNE rakeback, it kind of mitigates the swings.

I really dont want to share my strategy on public because its easier for other regs to exploit me. I can tell that I am playing reasonably aggro, something like 35/30/10 (VP$IP/PfR/3b). My standard opensize is min-raise and I am trying my best to balance raise-fold range, raise-call range and openshove range. Its the main key to success in these tournaments.

Oh and I won $27 turbo KO MTT for $5k or so. I was also playing Battle of Planets triple shootout freeroll this Sunday ($12k for first) and finished on semifinal table in last 3 where I got unlucky against not so good players.

Here is the total graph (SnGs + MTTs) with rakeback:

What would you like to read then? Give me some constructive criticism please :) I dont want to write about some bad beats etc and I will try to write much more about trips to live tournaments, which are more interesting then online grind.

    Hi PhasE89,

I think your doing a great job so far. And I think your heading in the right direction towards trying to become a pokerstars online pro. The website looks professional and your right no one wants to read bad beats!

What I would like to see you add to this month’s recap though is why have you switched from fifty/50′s to 6 man hyper turbo’s, is it just for the vpps or is the fifty/50′s becoming tougher to profit from and how do u handle the variance of hyper turbo’s?

YOu could also do a strategy post about how to play the hyper turbo’s, opening ranges, do u min raise or straight shove, etc.

Anyway I enjoy reading your posts and I will follow your journey through the poker world. Good luck at the tables!

      Hi Tigertonkin,

Thank you for your support, words like yours encourages me to post more. The website is still in beta-phase, everything should be working just fine in a week or two.

Hey Phase, nice to see you stil crushing it ;) I am really surprised that you gave up 50/50s ,it looked like they were a goldmine for you last year, now we can see how crucial is adapting for poker players..
anyway, i understand that you dont want to release strategy but could you give me some tips where you have looked when you were learning? some sites, coaching, videos ,etc.. i think wizz is obvious, but i need to ensure about setting ranges and so..
well, i wish you GL and hope you will reach 1 Mio VPP again soon ;)

Hi Haldir, I am learning how to play all by myself, analysing my hands in SnG Wiz and in ICM calculator (holdemresources.net). The most important is to keep playing to gain experience and to never be fully satisfied with your game, constantly trying to find more edge on the table. Thanks and GL to you too!

    Ahoj Martine,

super stránka a gratz k tvým úspěchům. Opravdu jdeš příkladem :)
Taky jsem se teď přesunul na 6max HT na stárech, ale abych řekl pravdu, tento formát mi prozatím moc nejde.
Předtím jsem hrál F50 a tubro KO.
Mohl by jsi mi poradit nějaké učební plány a základní strategii?

Děkuji a GL v novém formátu a nové výzvě.
    L.

      diky a GL!

Hello phasE89, nice website and nice blogs, do you play cash games or do you find that SNG’s are more profitable?, i am struggling at the moment knowing what my best game is, have played like 10,000 SNGs (around $7000 profit) with but have recently moved to cash in (pokerstars this is) which i have enojoyed more but the VPP’s you get are so small it seems compared to SNGS. The rake kills me in SNG’s it seems as i do not have a rackback? Any chance i could get one from anywhere cause it seems like i have lost thousands not having one

Good Luck and keep up the good work, i too one day hope to be a professional

A reply would make me happy

    Peace!
